How to Use Telnet on a Windows Computer
Telnet is great little program for doing a couple of interesting things. In fact, if you want to call yourself a hacker, you absolutely MUST be able to telnet! In this lesson you will find out a few of the cool things a hacker can do with telnet.
If you are using Win95, you can find telnet in the c:\windows directory, and on NT, in the c:\winnt\system32 directory. There isn't a lot of online help concerning the usage of the program, so my goal is to provide some information for new users.
First off, telnet isn't so much an application as it is a protocol. Telnet is protocol that runs over TCP/IP, and was used for connecting to remote computers. It provides a login interface, and you can run command-line programs by typing the commands on your keyboard, and the programs use the resources of the remote machine. The results are displayed in the terminal window on your machine, but the memory and CPU cycles consumed by the program are located on the remote machine. Therefore, telnet functions as a terminal emulation program, emulating a terminal on the remote machine.
Now, telnet runs on your Win95 box as a GUI application...that is to say that you can type "telnet" at the command prompt (in Windows 95 this is the MS-DOS prompt), and assuming that your PATH is set correctly, a window titled "telnet" will open. This differs from your ftp program in that all commands are entered in the DOS window.
Let's begin by opening telnet. Simply open a DOS window by clicking "start", then "programs", then "MS-DOS", and at the command prompt, type:
c:\telnet
The window for telnet will open, and you can browse the features of the program from the menu bar.

program that ships with Win95/NT. If you type "telnet" at the
command prompt and you don't get the telnet window, make sure
that the program is on your hard drive using the Start -> Find ->
Files or Folders command. Also make sure that your path statement includes the Windows directory. There are many other programs available that provide similar functionality, with a lot of other bells and whistles, from any number of software sites.

To learn a bit more about telnet, choose Help -> Contents, or
Help -> Search for help on... from the menu bar. Read through
the files in order to find more detailed explanations of things
you may wish to do. For example, in this explanation, I will
primarily be covering how to use the application and what it can
be used for, but now how to customize the colors for the application.
Now, if you choose Connect -> Remote System, you will be presented with a dialog window that will ask you for the remote host, the port and the terminal type.

NEWBIE NOTE: For most purposes, you can leave the terminal type on
VT100.

In the Connect dialog box, you can enter in the host to which
you wish to connect, and there is a list box of several ports
you can connect to:
daytime: May give you the current time on the server.
echo: May echo back whatever you type in, and will tell you that the computer you have connected to is alive nd running on the Internet. qotd: May provide you with a quote of the day.
chargen: May display a continuous stream of characters, useful for spotting network problems, but may crash your telnet program.
telnet: May present you with a login screen.
These will only work if the server to which you are trying to connect is running these services. However, you are not limited to just those ports...you can type in any port number you wish. (For more on fun ports, see the GTMHH, "Port Surf's Up.") You will only successfully connect to the port if the service in question is available. What occurs after you connect depends upon the protocol for that particular service.
When you are using telnet to connect to the telnet service on a server, you will (in most cases) be presented with a banner and a login prompt.

NEWBIE NOTE: It's not a good idea to connect to a host on which you don't have a valid account. In your attempts to guess a username and password, all you will do is fill the log files on that host. From there, you can very easily be traced, and your online service provider will probably cancel your account.

Now, you can also use telnet to connect to other ports, such as
ftp (21), smtp (25), pop3 (110), and even http (80). When you
connect to ftp, smtp, and pop3, you will be presented with a
banner, or a line of text that displays some information about the
service. This will give you a clue as to the operating system
running on the host computer, or it may come right out and tell
you what the operating system is...for instance, AIX, Linux,
Solaris, or NT. If you successfully connect to port 80, you will
see a blank screen. This indicates, again, that you have successfully completed the TCP negotiation and you have a connection.
Now, what you do from there is up to you. You can simply disconnect with the knowledge that, yes, there is a service running on port 80, or you can use your knowledge of the HTTP protocol to retrieve the HTML source for web pages on the server.
How to Download Web Pages Via Telnet
To retrieve a web page for a server using telnet, you need to connect to that server on port 80, generally. Some servers may use a different port number, such as 8080, but most web servers run on port 80. The first thing you need to do is click on Terminal -> Preferences and make sure that there is a check in the Local Echo box. Then, since most web pages will generally take up more than a single screen, enable logging by clicking Terminal -> Start Logging... and select a location and filename. Keep in mind that as long as logging is on, and the same file is being logged to, all new information will be appended to the file, rather than overwriting the
original file. This is useful if you want to record several sessions, and edit out the extraneous information using Notepad.
Now, connect the remote host, and if your connection is successful, type in:
GET / HTTP/1.0
and hit enter twice.

NEWBIE NOTE: Make sure that you hit enter twice...this is part
of the HTTP protocol. The single / after GET tells the server
to return the default index file, which is generally "index.html".
However, you can enter other filenames, as well.

You should have seen a bunch of text scroll by on the screen. Now you can open the log file in Notepad, and you will see the HTML
code for the page, just as though you had chosen the View Source
option from your web browser. You will also get some additional
information...the headers for the file will contain some information
about the server. For example:

One particularly interesting piece of information is the server
name. This refers to the web server software that is running
and serving web pages. You may see other names in this field,
such as versions of Microsoft IIS, Purveyor, WebSite, etc.
This will give you a clue as to the underlying operating system
running on the server.

database of exploits on web servers, can be particularly annoying.
Make sure you keep up on exploits and the appropriate security
patches from your web server and operating system vendors.

NEWBIE NOTE: This technique of gathering web pages is perfectly legal. You aren't attempting to compromise the target system, you are simply doing by hand what your web browser does for you automatically. Of course, this technique will not load images and Java applets for you.

Getting Finger Information Via Telnet
By now, you've probably heard or read a lot about finger. It doesn't seem like a very useful service, and many sysadmins disable the service because it provides information on a particular user, information an evil hacker can take advantage of. Win95 doesn't ship with a finger client, but NT does. You can download finger clients for Win95 from any number of software sites. But why do that when you have a readily available client in telnet?
The finger daemon or server runs on port 79, so connect to a remote host on that port. If the service is running, you will be presented with a blank screen.

NEWBIE NOTE: NT doesn't ship with a finger daemon (A daemon is a program on the remote computer which waits for people like you to connect to it), so generally speaking, and server that you find running finger will be a Unix box. I say "generally" because there are third-party finger daemons available and someone may want to run one on their NT computer.

The blank screen indicates that the finger daemon is waiting for input. If you have a particular user that you are interested in, type in the username and hit enter. A response will be provided, and the daemon will disconnect the client. If you don't know a particular username, you can start by simply hitting enter. In some cases, you may get a response such as "No one logged on." Or you may get information of all currently logged on users. It all depends on whether or not the sysadmin has chosen to enable certain features of the daemon. You can also try other names, such as "root", "daemon", "ftp", "bin", etc.
Another neat trick to try out is something that I have seen referred to as "finger forwarding". To try this out, you need two hosts that run finger. Connect to the first host, host1.com, and enter the username that you are interested in. Then go to the second host, and enter:

You should see the same information! Again, this all depends upon
the configuration of the finger daemon.
Using Telnet from the Command Line
Now, if you want to show your friends that you a "real man" because "real men don't need no stinkin' GUIs", well just open up a DOS window and type:
c:\>telnet
and the program will automatically attempt to connect to the host
on the designated port for you.
Using Netcat
Let me start by giving a mighty big thanks to Weld Pond from L0pht for producing the netcat program for Windows NT. To get a copy of this program, which comes with source code, simply go to:

NOTE: The first character of "l0pht: is the letter "l". The second character is a zero, not an "o".
I know that the program is supposed to run on NT, but I have
seen it run on Win95. It's a great little program that can be used
to do some of the same things as telnet. However, there are
advantages to using netcat...for one, it's a command-line program,
and it can be included in a batch file. In fact, you can automate
multiple calls to netcat in a batch file, saving the results to
a text file.

Before using netcat, take a look at the readme.txt file provided in
the zipped archive you downloaded. It goes over the instructions
on how to download web pages using netcat, similar to what I
described earlier using telnet.
There are two ways to go about getting finger information using
netcat. The first is in interactive mode. Simply type:
c:\>nc
If the daemon is running, you won't get a command prompt back. If this is the case, type in the username and hit enter. Or use the automatic mode by first creating a text file containing the username of interest. For example, I typed:
c:\>edit root
and entered the username "root", without the quotes. Then from
the command prompt, type:
c:\>nc
and the response will appear on your screen. You can save the
output to a file by adding the appropriate redirection operator
to the end of the file:
c:\>nc
to create the file nc.log, or:
c:\>nc
to append the response to the end of nc.log. NOTE: Make sure
that you use spaces between the redirection operators.
How to Break into a Windows 95 machine Connected to the Internet
Disclaimer
The intent of this file is NOT to provide a step-by-step guide to accessing a Win95 computer while it is connected to the Internet. The intent is show you how to protect yourself.
There are no special tools needed to access a remote Win95 machine...everything you need is right there on your Win95 system! Two methods will be described...the command-line approach and the GUI approach.
Protecting Yourself
First, the method of protecting yourself needs to be made perfectly clear. DON'T SHARE FILES!! I can't stress that enough. If you are a home user, and you are connecting a Win95 computer to the Internet via some dial-up method, disable sharing. If you must share, use a strong password...8 characters minimum, a mix of upper and lower case letters and numbers, change the password every now and again. If you need to transmit the
password to someone, do so over the phone or by written letter. To disable sharing, click on My Computer -> Control Panel -> Network -> File and Print Sharing. In the dialog box that appears, uncheck both boxes. It's that easy.
What Can They Do?
What can someone do? Well, lots of stuff, but it largely depends on what shares are available. If someone is able to share a printer from your machine, they can send you annoying letters and messages. This consumes time, your printer ink/toner, and your paper. If they are able to share a disk share, what they can do largely depends upon what's in that share. The share appears as another directory on the attacker's machine, so any programs they run will be consuming their own resources...memory, cpu cycles, etc. But if the attacker has read and write access to those disk shares, then you're in trouble. If you take work home, your files may be vulnerable. Initialization and configuration files can be searched for passwords. Files can be modified and deleted. A particularly nasty thing to do is adding a line to your autoexec.bat file so that the next time your computer is booted, the hard drive is formatted without any prompting from the user. Bad ju-ju, indeed.
** The command-line approach **
Okay, now for the part that should probably be titled "How they do it". All that is needed is the IP address of the remote machine. Now open up a DOS window, and at the command prompt, type:
c:\>nbtstat -A [ip_addr]
If the remote machine is connected to the Internet and the ports used for sharing are not blocked, you should see something like]
Now, your response may be varied. You may find that there are no shares on the list, or that there are several shares available. Choose which share you would like to connect to, and type the command:
c:\>net use g: \\[ip_addr]\[share_name]
You will likely get a response that the command was completed successfully. If that is the case, type:
c:\>cd g:
or which ever device name you decided to use. You can now view what exists on that share using the dir commands, etc.
Now, you may be presented with a password prompt when you ssue the above command. If that is the case, typical "hacker" (I shudder at that term) methods may be used.
** The GUI approach **
After issuing the nbtstat command, you can opt for the GUI approach to accessing the shares on that machine. To do so, make sure that you leave the DOS window open, or minimized...don't close it. Now, use Notepad to open this file:
c:\windows\lmhosts.sam
Read over the file, and then open create another file in Notepad, called simply "Lmhosts", without an extension. The file should contain the IP address of the host, the NetBIOS name of the host (from the nbtstat command), and #PRE, separated by tabs. Once you have added this information, save it, and minimize the window. In the DOS command window, type:
c:\>nbtstat -R
This command reloads the cache from the Lmhosts file you just created.
Now, click on Start -> Find -> Computer, and type in the NetBIOS name of the computer...the same one you added to the lmhosts file. If your attempt to connect to the machine is successful, you should be presented with a window containing the available shares. You may be presented with a password prompt window, but again, typical "hacker" (again, that term grates on me like fingernails on a chalk board, but today, it seems that it's all folks understand) techniques may be used to break the password.

Note from Carolyn Meinel: Want to try this stuff without winding up in jail or getting expelled from school? Get a friend to give you permission to try to break in.
First, you will need his or her IP address. Usually this will be different every time your friend logs on. You friend can learn his or her IP address by going to the DOS prompt while online and giving the command "netstat -r". Something like this should show up:

Your friend's IP address should be under "Gateway Address." Ignore the 127.0.0.1 as this will show up for everyone and simply means "locahost" or "my own computer." If in doubt, break the Internet connection and then get online again. The number that changes is the IP address of your friend's computer.

Evil Genius tip: Here is something really scary. In your shell account give the "netstat" command. If your ISP allows you to use it, you might be able to get the dynamically assigned IP addresses of people from all over the world -- everyone who is browsing a Web site hosted by your ISP, everyone using ftp, spammers you might catch red-handed in the act of forging email on your ISP, guys up at 2AM playing on multiuser dungeons, IRC users, in fact you will see everyone who is connected to your ISP!

YOU CAN GO TO JAIL WARNING: If you find a Windows 95 box on the Internet with file sharing enabled and no password protection, you can still get in big trouble for exploiting it. It's just like finding a house whose owner forgot to lock the door -- you still are in trouble if someone catches you inside. Tell temptation to take a hike!

EMINEM'S BIOGRAPHY - (PART- I)
Marshall Bruce Mathers III was born on October 17, 1972 in Kansas City. His mother, Deborah Mathers-Briggs, was married at 15 and less than three years later, almost died delivering her first son at the end of a 73-hour labor. "I went through a living h*ll," Debbie has said, recalling the doctor who charged $90 for prenatal visits, delivery and circumcision.
Eminem's mother and his father, Marshall Mathers Jr, were both in a covers band called the Daddy Warbucks. Shortly after Eminem was born, the family relocated to North Dakota where his dad was supposed to take a job as a hotel manager. In 1973, Debbie took Eminem and moved to St. Joseph to live with her Aunt Edna. According to Eminem's father, he came home one day to find that his wife and son were gone. Two years later, Debbie filed for a divorce and the agreement left him with no visitation rights. Eminem never saw his father again.
Eminem spent most of his early childhood moving back and forth between Kansas City and the metropolitan Detroit area. Because he was constantly changing schools, Eminem found it difficult to make friends and he was often an easy target for bullies. While Eminem was attending Dort Elementary school in 1982, a bully named D'angelo Bailey put a severe beating on the 8-year-old boy. The incident occured in the school washroom where Eminem was found in a pool of blood and rushed to the hospital.
On a separate occasion in 1983, after throwing a snowball at Eminem's head, the same bully pushed him into a snowbank and beat him up. As a result of the attack, Eminem suffered from a cerebral concussion. He almost lost his eyesight and his hearing and there was even a possibility that he might have died. It took a year for him to bounce back but luckily he made it.
In 1986, Debbie Mathers gave birth to another baby boy named Nathan. His father left Debbie and she successfully sued him for child support. Though he was only 13 at the time, Eminem played a big part in helping Debbie raise Nate. A year later, the family settled in Warren. "I don't think I've seen segregation as bad as this, out of all the places I've lived," he says of Detroit. "I've lived in the white neighborhoods, I've lived in the black neighborhoods, I've fucking seen it all, and I know I would not be able to rap the way I rap if it wasn't for living here."
As a young teen, Eminem loved comic books and dreamt of being a cartoonist. In 1987, however, his Uncle Ronnie introduced him to rap music. After hearing the Ice-T song "Reckless," Eminem decided to be a rap artist. He wrote his first rap song to LL Cool J's "I'm Bad" at age 14. That year, he began attending Lincoln High school. Other students recall that he didn't stand out much except for an excellent rap performance at the school's annual talent show.
It was around this time that Eminem met his first girlfriend Kimberley Anne Scott. The two met through mutual friends. "She came by, and I remember I was jumping all around the furniture while lipsynching L.L. Cool J songs," Eminem recalls. The two quickly became inseperable. "Detroit is really segregated and to get to Kim's part of town, I would have to walk through all-black neighborhoods. I would always get my ass beat; I even got shot at once. But Kim would usually meet me halfway. Or sometimes we would walk down the railroad tracks- nobody would F*c* with us there," Eminem recalls.
According to Eminem's grandmother, Betty Kresin, Deborah took Kim in at age 12 after she was kicked out of her house. "They fought like brother and sister," Betty says of Eminem and Kim's early relationship. "But then all of a sudden it reversed and they became intimate."
Eminem made his first radio appearance at age 15 on the Detroit radio station WDRQ (93.1) At the time he was going by the stage name M&M. DJ Lisa Orlando says, "We basically let 'em call, and they'd rap for us on the phone. If I thought they had some talent, we'd bring 'em down and put them in the production room. It was all live on the radio. You'd point to the kid, and this street kid would have to just start doin' his thing." Eminem made the cut and him and his crew became regulars on Open Mic Night.
"He was different," says Orlando, "but he was shy. He was a little more timid when he was doing the show. At the time, he wasn't the one that I thought would make it. But he'd come down, and his raps would always be funny. The other guys would all talk about some girl or getting into fights, your typical gangsta rap stuff. And he'd come in talkin' junk- he was unique." During one of his radio appearances, Eminem was discovered by local producers Marky and Jeff Bass. After meeting with Eminem, they signed him to their independent label Web Entertainment.
That year, Eminem faced another encounter that could have cost him his life. While walking through the neighborhood one day, a car full of guys gave Eminem the finger. He returned the gesture and didn't think much of it until he turned the corner and saw them waiting for him. They stripped him down to his boxers and pointed a gun at him. Luckily, a truck driver pulled over, pulled out a gun of his own and scared off the attackers.
In 1989, after failing grade nine for the third time, Eminem dropped out of high school to pursue his career as a rapper.
EMINEM'S BIOGRAPHY - (PART- II)
After quitting school, Eminem was constantly struggling to find work as well as become an MC. After working on an assembly line and painting pictures on clothes, Eminem got a job at a family restaurant called Gilbert's Lodge. He worked there for $5.50 an hour with his high school friend Mike Ruby.
The two of them also recorded songs in Mike's basement, which they dubbed Bassmint Productions. Mike went by the stage name of Manix and Eminem took the initials from his real name and came up with M&M, later modified to Eminem. The only song that has materialized from Eminem's days with Bassmint Productions is the track "Crackers N Cheese." To listen to it, click here
Before long, Eminem decided to take his rhyme's outside of Mike's basement, but found it difficult to find a receptive audience. At the age of 16, he would often go to hip hop clubs to rap but very few people wanted to hear some skinny white boy rhyme. So Eminem became a battle MC, and he finally found an accepting audience at the Hip Hop Shop.
"He was getting in everybody's ass. It was kind of political at first, because he was an outsider," says House Shoes, a DJ at St. Andrew's Hall. "After he bit a few heads off people, it got to the point where people looked forward to him coming out there." Eminem became so well known that a local emcee named Kuniva, who is now a member of D-12, once battled Eminem to boost his credibility.
Eminem faced the most devastating moment of his life in 1990 when he learned his Uncle Ronnie had committed suicide. Eminem was apparently so shaken by Ronnie's death that he couldn't bring himself to attend the funeral and he barely even talked to anyone for some time after the incident. Eminem has a tattoo on his left arm that reads "Ronnie R.I.P" to memoralize his late soulmate and he also wears a dogtag around his neck which used to belong to Ronnie. After Ronnie's death, Eminem decided to stop rapping for the time being.
When Eminem decided to take up rapping again, he was part of several rap groups including the New Jacks and Soul Intent who released their first single "Biterphobia" in 1995 on Web Entertainment. A rapper named Proof, who had been best friends with Eminem since they were teens, was featured on the B-side of the single. That year, Proof decided to form a group of the best emcees in Detroit. The first three members were Eminem, Proof and another rapper named Kon Artis. The group was named D-12 which stands for the Dirty Dozen.
Although his rap career was getting off to a good star, Eminem had a lot of financial problems. Making ends meet became even more difficult when Kim gave birth to her and Eminem's daughter Hailie Jade on December 25, 1995. Eminem took time off of his music career in order to raise money for his family. His former manager at Gilbert's Lodge remembers a six-month period shortly after Hailie's birth when Eminem worked 60 hours a week."
In 1996, Eminem released his debut album Infinite. On the album, he rapped about love, unity and moving on in spite of hard times and his rhyme style was compared to that of Nas and Jay-Z. Eminem was discouraged by the negative response that his album received and his producers were starting to give up on him.
At this point, Eminem started to become fed up with everything. He needed an outlet to dump all of his emotions in and finally during a toilet session in 1997, he came up with an idea. Every member of D-12 needed to have an alter ego and Eminem was having trouble thinking of a name a for his. While sitting on the pot, Eminem came up with the name Slim Shady, an evil side to himself that always spoke his mind no matter what.
As Eminem prepared to record his second underground album, his personal life began to spiral downhill. His little brother Nathan was removed from their mother's custody in 1996 after St. Clair Shores school officials accused her of abusing him. They claimed that she "exhibits a very suspicious, almost paranoid personality" and suggested she might have had munchausen syndrome, where a parent injures a child to gain sympahty for herself.
Debbie Mathers-Briggs pleaded no contest to charges that she was emotionally unstable and had failed her son by isolating him from other children; with that, she regained custody. By then, Nathan had been in foster homes for more than a year. Through it all, neighbors remember that Eminem was always there for Nate. "He was good to his brother," says Rose Slone, a former family friend who knew Marshall from when he visited his mother and brother in a rundown Warren trailer park. "He was always there for Nathan."
Things started to become even more difficult for Eminem in 1997. Kim dumped him and he couldn't afford a place to stay. He was either staying with friends or living with his mother. While staying at his mom's house, Eminem wrote the first song for The Slim Shady EP which he called "Just Don't Give a F*c*." Many that knew him were surprised by the song because the subject matter was so different from what he usually rapped about. "I soon found myself doing things that I normally didn't do. Like getting into drugs and drinking. I was really fucked up. I was sick of everything," Eminem remembers.
During the time that Kim and Eminem were broken up, they were both involved with other people but she refused to let Em see their daughter. "Marshall would try to see little Hailie and Kim's stepfather met him at the door one day and told him 'you're no good, you're never going to amount to anything and if you ever come here again, I'll kill you,'" Eminem's grandmother said in a recent interview with a British radio station.
This led to Eminem writing the song '97 Bonnie & Clyde in which he kills Kim and with Hailie's help, dumps her dead body into the lake. "I even went so far as to use Hailie for the vocal you hear on the record. It was my little baby's first musical appearance," Eminem says. The Slim Shady EP was released that year and quickly became an underground classic. Eminem thought he was about to be discovered when a guy who claimed to work at a record company promised to play his tape for an executive at the label. However, it turned out the guy was just a mailroom clerk and couldn't get Eminem's tape anywhere.
During that time, Eminem had also been evicted from the place he was staying. Him and his friend were living with somebody who offered them cheaper rent. Although they were paying their rent, their roommate wasn't paying the landlord so they were all kicked out. Fed up with everything, Eminem wrote the song "Rock Bottom" and that night he attempted suicide.
"A bunch of other personal shit was happening in my life right about then, and I just thought I wasn't gonna get a deal no matter what, and I just took a fucking bunch of pills. I puked the shit up. I didn't have to go to hospital but my fucking stomach hurt so bad. I had a little problem and I just took too many. I don't know if I was necessarily trying to kill myself, I was just really depressed and I kept thinking, more pills, more pills, I just kept taking 'em. I bet I took 20 pills in the course of two hours," Eminem says of the ordeal. Little did he know that he would soon get the big break he'd been hoping for all of his life.
EMINEM'S BIOGRAPHY - (PART- III)
Soon after the release of his second album, Eminem and D-12 took a trip down to Florida to participate in the How Can I Be Down seminar. While there, Wendy Day, the founder of the rap coalition, invited Eminem to compete in the 1997 Rap Olympics. Figuring the $500 cash prize could help him out, Eminem jumped at the chance to go. "I went with the mind frame that I was not gonna lose," he recalls. "I needed that cash so bad. I had a job, but I was working part time so I could do my rap shit."
Despite his confidence, Eminem placed second after losing to an emcee named Juice. Ultimately it didn't matter because after his performance, an assistant to Jimmy Iovine (the CEO of Interscope Records) asked Eminem for a demo tape. Eminem gave him a copy of The Slim Shady EP without even knowing that this guy worked for a record company. "He came up to me afterwards and I didn't know he was anybody from anything," Eminem remembers. "He was like, 'Yo, you got a tape or anything?' I was all pissed, like, 'Yeah, here just take it,'" Eminem remembers.
Jimmy Iovine liked what he heard and played the tape for legendary rap producer Dr. Dre. After hearing the demo, Dre became very interested in Eminem and he wasn't the only one. Back in Detroit, Web Entertainment was getting tons of orders for The Slim Shady EP. Eminem's underground buzz landed him an appearance on The Wake Up Show in Los Angeles. Dr. Dre heard the performance and called the radio station to question Eminem's whereabouts. Finally, Dre got in contact with the Eminem and signed him to his Interscope distributed Aftermath Records. Initially, Dre thought the young rapper was black. At their first face-to-face meeting, Em says, "he was kind of, like, blown back a little bit."
Regardless, the two recorded "My Name Is" within an hour of meeting and Dr. Dre was soon producing Eminem's major label debut. Things finally started looking up for Eminem. In 1998, Eminem released "Just Don't Give a F*c*" as a single and a few months later him and Kim got back together. The Slim Shady LP was released on February 23, 1999 and went triple platinum. "My Name Is" became a major hit and Eminem was officially a star. In addition to his success, Eminem's personal life reached a high point when he married Kim on June 14.
Finally, Eminem had acheived his dream but he soon learned that fame isn't all it's cracked up to be. His mother slapped him with a 10 million dollar lawsuit, saying that he defamed her character by telling various magazines that she was an unfit mother. She denies that she ever collected welfare although records obtained by the Detroit Free Press indicate otherwise. Records also state that she had several different jobs while Eminem was a child and she was constantly moving houses. Eminem attended at least 5 different schools in 4 years when he was young, yet Debbie claims to have been a good mother to him.
Eminem's legal troubles didn't end there. For his second major label release, Eminem wanted to pay tribute to his Uncle Ronnie by sampling a tape of them rapping together. Eminem's grandmother threatened to sue him if he dared to use the tape; to avoid anymore lawsuits, Eminem dropped the idea altogether.
At the 1999 MTV Music Video Awards, Eminem won Best New Artist in a video for "My Name Is." Eminem seemed surprised by his victory and didn't even have a speech prepared. "Uh oh, was this supposed to happen?" he joked while accepting the award. In February, he won two Grammy awards, one for Best Rap Album and one for Best Rap Solo Performance.
On May 23, 2000, Eminem released The Marshall Mathers LP. The album broke numerous records, including the fastest selling hip hop album ever and the highest opening s*l*s for a solo artist in recent history. In just one week, the album sold 1.75 million copies and garnered critical acclaim, however, some people weren't so impressed with the album's subject matter. GLAAD, the g*y and l*sb**n Alliance Against Defamation, claimed that the album's lyrics were "the most homophobic and hateful that GLADD have ever seen in the past 15 years."
In June, Eminem was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon and assault with a deadly weapon. He allegedly beat nightclub bouncer John Guerra with the butt of his unloaded pistol for kissing Kim in the parking lot of the Hot Rocks Cafe in Warren. Prosecutors also say that in the hours prior to that incident, Eminem pulled his gun on Insane Clown Posse associate Douglas Dail at an electronics store in Royal Oak, Mich.
In spite of his legal woes, Eminem went on a summer tour with Dr. Dre, Xzibit, Ice Cube and others on the Up in Smoke tour. While Eminem was gone, Kim attempted suicide by slashing her wrists. The incident occured on July 8 and it was later revealed that Eminem was planning to file for a divorce which was made official on August 16. At first Em was planning to fight for sole custody but later settled to give Kim ten million dollars, a personal driver, re-enstatement of her credit cars and joint custody of their child.
In the fall of 2000, Eminem joined Limp Bizkit, Xzibit, D-12 and Papa Roach on the Anger Management tour. When he came to perform in Toronto on October 26, officials threatened to arrest him if he performed the song "Kill You" because a woman named Valerie Smith claimed that the lyrics violated Canada's hate crime law. Eminem performed the song anyway and at the end of his set, he dedicated "The Way I Am" to "that bitch Valerie Smith!"
Kim and Eminem decided to call off their divorce in December and renew their relationship for the sake of their daughter. Eminem went on a European tour with Outkast, Xzibit and D-12. When he arrived in Britain, controversy followed. Officials were not too pleased with his stage antics which included using a chainsaw on stage and pretending to take Ecstacy.
More controversy followed when it was announced that Eminem was nominated for four awards at the 2001 Grammys. After Eminem agreed to attend and perform, he shocked everyone by going on stage with openly g*y singer Elton John. 200 GLAAD members protested outside, but Eminem and Elton receieved a standing ovation. That night, Eminem took home 3 awards but lost the Album of the Year award to Steely Dan's 2 Against Nature.
As for his legal troubles, Eminem pleaded guilty to carrying a concealed weapon and the charge for assault with a deadly weapon was dropped. As a result, he received 2 years probation. Recently, Eminem's personal life took another twist when Kim filed for a divorce on March 1, 2001. The couple have reached a settlement giving them joint custody of Hailie.
Recently, Eminem executive produced the D-12 album "Devil's Night" which was released on June 19th. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts and the single Purple Pills was a hit. Currently, Eminem is working on a movie and his third LP which is said to be more of an emotional album.

Michael Joseph Jackson (born August 29, 1958), is one of the most successful African-American popular music singers of all time. He is also known as The King of Pop or the King of the Music Video. Jackson's successful career has gained him legions of devoted fans, yet he has been dogged by media fascination with his changing physical appearance and what some perceive as an 'eccentric' lifestyle, which has led the tabloid press to dub him 'Wacko Jacko'. More recently he has been subjected to repeated accusations of sexual abuse of children. He is currently under indictment for alleged child molestation and other offenses, which he denies. As of January 2005 jury selection has started prior to his upcoming trial in Santa Maria, California.

Personal background
Jackson was born the seventh of nine children in Gary, Indiana to Joseph and Katherine Jackson. The entire family lived in a tiny two-bedroom house., and Jackson's father Joseph Jackson earned a meager living working in a steel mill. Jackson and his sister LaToya both claimed that their father was cruel and physically abusive to his children. Jackson broke down and wept during a television interview when asked about this, and said that even as an adult just meeting his father often made him physically ill.
At the behest of their moter Katherine, the Jackson children were raised as Jehovah's Witnesses and practiced door-to-door evangelization. Jackson continued to do so after becoming famous, but then in disguise. His career and flamboyant style led to friction with congregation elders. At one point, his sister LaToya was shunned by Jehovah's Witnesses, and in 1987, he formally left the religion.
Jackson has been living at his 11 kmВІ (2600 acres) ranch in Santa Ynez, California, named 'Neverland' after the magical kingdom featured in the children's story Peter Pan. In December 2003, he said that after it had been searched by police (see below), it no longer felt like a home, and is now a house he just visits. He now lives in Beverly Hills in a $70,000-a-month rented home.
He says that, like Peter Pan, he does not want to grow up. Neverland contains a small zoo and amusement park. About once a week he has been inviting a bus full of (especially sick and poor) children there to have a day of fun. Jackson kept a chimpanzee, Bubbles, in Neverland, which he valued highly, treating him more like a friend than a pet. Bubbles was moved from the ranch after reaching maturity because adult chimpanzees are very strong and can be dangerous.
Jackson marriages and children
In 1994 Jackson married Lisa Marie Presley, the daughter of Elvis Presley; the marriage lasted less than two years, ending in divorce. In 1996 he married Debbie Rowe. They had a son, Prince Michael, and a daughter, Paris Katherine. They were divorced in 1999. Rowe later said that she let Jackson have the children as a 'gift'.
Around February 2002 Jackson had another son, Prince Michael II, also called 'Blanket', with a surrogate mother whose identity has not been disclosed. In late 2002, Jackson stirred up controversy while staying in a hotel in Berlin by briefly suspending him over the edge of the railing of a balcony.
In what Jackson explains as a security measure against kidnapping, the children's faces are masked or veiled when they are in public.
In December 2003 Jackson's parents promised they would look after the three children if they were taken away from their son. Reportedly the children have been interviewed by social workers.
In March 2004 it was confirmed there was an unspecified family matter between Michael Jackson and Debbie Rowe, to be handled in mediation.
In July 2004 news was released that Jackson is to be the father of quadruplets, via artificial insemination. The mother is said to be a 'struggling actress'. Jackson however, strongly denied the allegations.
Rumours last year claimed that he had another seventeen-year-old son, Michael Joseph Jackson Jr., who apparently has an almost identical resemblance of him as a young man.
Jackson, a vegetarian, claims a strong connection to both children and animals. His favorite pastimes include water balloon fights and climbing trees. He has written several songs sitting in his favorite tree at Neverland, which he calls Giving Tree, because he says it is so inspiring.
Another favorite pastime has been sleepovers with children, but because, as he understands now, it violates a social norm and places him in a vulnerable position with regard to suspicions and allegations of sexual abuse, he will no longer have them with children not related to him.
Jackson's celebrity friends have included Quincy Jones, Diana Ross, Marlon Brando, comedians Steve Harvey and Chris Tucker and actress Elizabeth Taylor and former child actor Macaulay Culkin, who are godparents to Prince Michael and Paris. He is also friends with paranormalist Uri Geller. He has also been friends with rabbi Shmuley Boteach, with whom Jackson founded the now defunct 'Heal the World' and 'Heal the Kids' foundations. Five of the Jackson brothers, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael, formed the Jackson 5, an R&B musical act, in the mid 1960s. With Michael as the lead singer, the group built up a following and a buzz by playing at clubs and bars throughout the Midwest, and even winning an Amateur Night competition at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. It is alleged that they were beaten and abused by their father if they performed poorly.
The Jackson 5 were discovered and signed to Motown Records in 1969. Label head Berry Gordy moved the Jackson family to California, and proceeded to turn them into international stars. The group's first four singles, 'I Want You Back' from 1969, and 'ABC', 'The Love You Save', and 'I'll Be There' from 1970 all became #1 hits in the US. In 1976, the Jackson brothers signed a better deal with Epic Records, leaving behind at Motown the 'Jackson 5' name and Jermaine (who had married Berry Gordy's daughter Hazel). Now known as The Jacksons, and featuring younger brother Randy in Jermaine's place, the brothers continued their successful career, touring internationally and releasing 6 albums between 1976 and 1984. Hits during this period included 'Enjoy Yourself' & 'Show You The Way To Go' (1976), 'Find Me A Girl' (1977), 'Blame It On The Boogie' (1978), 'Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)' (1979), 'Can You Feel It?' & Heartbreak Hotel (1980) and 'Torture' & 'State of Shock' (1984).
Jackson starred in the film The Wiz (alongside Diana Ross) in 1978. It was here that he met Quincy Jones, the producer of The Wiz, who would later produce Michael's three most acclaimed solo albums, Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad. Off the Wall, released in 1979, produced a record four Top 10 hits and sold seven million copies in the United States.

Michael Jackson's 1979 album Off the Wall was a worldwide hit and spawned the #1 hit singles and music videos 'Rock With You' and 'Don't Stop Till You Get Enough'. A ballad, 'She's Out Of My Life' reached the top 10 in 1980.
In the 1980s, Jackson released a progression of solo albums of slickly-produced synthesizer-heavy pop.
His Thriller album was released in 1982, produced 7 Top 10 hit singles, broke records and quickly became the world's best selling album (as of 2003 it has sold over 50 million copies). The 'Billie Jean' music video, released to promote Thriller, became the first video by a black artist to be aired on MTV, and the Thriller short film, included with The Making of Michael Jackson's Thriller, became the world's best selling home video at the time.
'Billie Jean' and 'Thriller', as well as 'Beat It', were the three music videos released from the album, and have since become three of MTV's most significant videos in history, placing highly on several MTV and VH1 countdowns, and receiving substantial airplay on MTV2 to this day. The album's other singles were 'Human Nature' and 'P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)', both of which were also hits, despite neither having music videos.
While performing for the Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever special on television on May 16, 1983, Jackson publicly performed the moonwalk (later his signature dance move) for the first time, stunning TV audiences. In January 1984 at the American Music Awards, Jackson was nominated for 9 awards and won a record 8 awards (tied by Whitney Houston's The Bodyguard soundtrack in 1994). In February at the Grammy Awards Jackson was nominated for 12 awards and won a record-breaking 8 awards (now equaled by Carlos Santana's 1999 Supernatural) – 7 for Thriller and 1 for his narrative on The E.T. Storybook. In May, Thriller was certified by the Guiness Book of Records as the biggest selling popular music album of all time. In addition in 1984, he was also awarded the H. Claude Hodson Medal of Freedom at the NAACP Image Awards, feted at the White House by President Ronald Reagan with the Presidential Special Achievement Award and in November was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Inspired by Band Aid he was instrumental in organising the single 'We Are the World' (co-written with Lionel Richie) in 1985. 'We Are the World' was sung by 44 different singers including Cyndi Lauper, Diana Ross, Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder and sold 7 million copies in the United States, becoming the best selling single of the year, to raise money for USA for Africa – a charity working to raise awareness about and help starving people in Africa.
Jackson starred in the George Lucas/Francis Ford Coppola 3-D film Captain Eo in 1986, which was shown in Disney theme parks until 1998. Minute for minute it is the most expensive film ever produced, costing an estimated US $30 million to make. The film contained the songs 'We Are Here To Change The World' and 'Another Part Of Me'.
In 1987, Jackson released Bad and began his first solo world tour. He performed to sold out audiences at each concert. The following year Jackson released a silly, playful movie entitled 'Moonwalker' and a serious, personal autobiography titled Moon Walk.
Bad was another smash success for Jackson. Its singles and music videos 'I Just Can't Stop Loving You', 'Bad', 'The Way You Make Me Feel', 'Man In The Mirror', 'Dirty Diana', 'Another Part Of Me', 'Smooth Criminal' and 'Leave Me Alone' provided Jackson with another string of hits. The album's only relatively unsuccessful single, 'Liberian Girl', remains to this day as one of Jackson's least seen music videos and least heard singles. Nonetheless, he made history by becoming the first artist to generate 6 number one singles off of one album. Of the 7 singles released in the USA, the first 5 went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, 'Another Part Of Me' peaked at #11 (#1 on Billboard's R&B charts) and 'Smooth Criminal' went to #7.
Jackson was awarded a record breaking $890 million contract by Sony and released an album Dangerous in 1991. During the Dangerous world tour Jackson announced the creation of his Heal the World Foundation. Dangerous contained the singles and music videos 'Who Is It', 'Give In To Me', 'Gone Too Soon' (a tribute to young AIDS victim Ryan White), and 'Will You Be There', which would later become the theme song to the movie Free Willy. But the album's most successful and memorable singles and videos were 'Jam', 'Remember The Time', 'Black Or White', 'In The Closet', and 'Heal The World'. As was becoming the standard for Jackson, the album's music videos were among the most costly, creative, and innovative of their time. 'Give In To Me' featured Slash from Guns n' Roses in its video. The video for 'Heal The World', to correspond to Jackson's charity of the same name, featured children and people from throughout the world. 'Will You Be There' showed Jackson singing in front of scenes from Free Willy. Several of the other videos had complex storylines and dance sequences, and featured cameo appearances by celebrities. The video for 'Jam' showed Jackson and Michael Jordan playing basketball and dancing together, while 'Remember The Time' was set in a Egyptian palace and starred Eddie Murphy as the king of the palace who was trying to entertain his wife, played by Iman. Magic Johnson played the king's chief guard. Jackson's singing and dancing is the thing that finally makes Iman's character happy, in the seven-minute long video. Jackson and Naomi Campbell played lovers in 'In The Closet'.
Black Or White
Of all the album's groundbreaking and popular videos, 'Black Or White' probably remains the most aired and most remembered today. The original video is over ten minutes long, and premiered simultaneously on MTV, VH1, BET, and ABC, becoming one of the most-watched music video premieres in history. The original video begins with Macaulay Culkin playing a young Jackson fan whose father (played by George Wendt) tells him to turn his music down. Culkin's character, instead, decides to bring his speakers into the living room and cranks the speakers to full blast, which sends the father flying through the roof, in a manner somewhat similar to that used in an earlier Twisted Sister music video. He ends up landing in the middle of some exotic location. The music to 'Black Or White' then starts, and Jackson proceeds to take viewers on a trip around the world, from country to country and culture to culture. As the song ends, the video features a morphing effect, whereby the faces of several different people of different ethnicities' (including Tyra Banks and voice actor Cree Summer) are morphed one into another, as a symbol of global unity. Although this was not the first music video to feature morphing technology — former 10cc members Godley & Creme used morphing even more extensively in the 1985 video to their song 'Cry', though in a less technologically polished way — it was the first exposure many people had to the technology, and this effect amazed those who saw the video for the first time. Thanks in part to 'Black Or White', as well as the development of computer technology, the morphing effect has since become somewhat common in music videos today, and can now be done much cheaper than in the early 1990s. The original video for 'Black Or White' then continued, even after the song itself ended, for another four minutes. The last four minutes depicted Jackson doing his infamous crotch-rubbing, smashing store windows, and destroying a car with a metal crowbar. It finally ended with a cameo appearance by Bart and Homer Simpson. However, Jackson's rampage and crotch grabbing caused a good deal of controversy with many parents of young children who watched the video's premiere. MTV and other music video stations decided to cut out the last four minutes of the video for all subsequent airings, and Jackson issued an apology statement to anyone who had been offended. To date, the final four minutes of the 'Black Or White' video has only since re-aired in America on MTV2 between the hours of 1 AM and 4 AM, as part of their special uncensored airing of the 'Most Controversial Music Videos' of all time, however the extended version is available on Jackson's DVDs. A few years ago, VH1 Europe aired them in daytime but now cuts them out.
HIStory to Invincible
HIStory, a double-disc album, was released in 1995. Its first disc had fifteen of his greatest hits and second disc contained fifteen new songs. The album produced two new hit singles and videos in America: 'Scream', a duet with his sister Janet, whose futuristic music video, with a seven million dollar price tag, is the most expensive music video ever made; and 'You Are Not Alone', the first song to ever debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart and whose video had a cameo from Jackson's then-wife, Lisa Marie Presley. The album's other singles and videos, 'Childhood', 'Earth Song', 'Stranger In Moscow', and 'They Don't Care About Us' had limited success in America, and performed far better in Europe. 'Childhood' is notable for having been the theme song to Free Willy 2. 'They Don't Care About Us' caused a stir when it was released due to controversial lyrics which were considered by some to be anti-Semitic. This caused American MTV and VH1 to ban the song's music video, even though it garnered heavy airplay on many of America's Boxnetworks. The lyrics 'Jew me, sue me/ Kick me, kike me' were modified on the album's official release in reponse to the criticism. Apart from the video for 'Scream,' singles and videos from HIStory nowadays garner little airplay in America, making the album a failure overall by Jackson's standards, though it has sold over 18 million double albums as of 2004. On the other hand, the album spawned his biggest hit ever in the UK, 'Earth Song' stayed at the top of the chart for six weeks and sold over a million copies.
In 1997 Jackson released Blood on the Dance Floor, a remix album of several of the tracks off of HIStory, which also included 5 new songs and has since become the biggest-selling remix album of all time. The album only had one single and official music video, the title track, which failed to catch on in America, and again proved a far more popular hit in Europe. However, Jackson also produced 'Ghosts', a 40-minute short film, which was shown in several movie theaters and uses the songs 'Ghosts' and '2 Bad' in the film. The short film 'Ghosts' is occasionally played as an hour-long special, with space made for commercials, on MTV and VH1, especially during the Halloween season.
Jackson's 2001 album Invincible, the most expensive album ever produced, debuted at number one on the U.S. charts, selling 2 million copies in the United States and 5-6 million worldwide. While the numbers seemed impressive, the sales figures were nonetheless disappointing, considering Jackson's previous success and the cost of the album. As opposed to his earlier albums which each spawned at least six singles, most of which were generally worldwide smashes, Invincible produced only the singles 'You Rock My World' and 'Butterflies' in America. 'Cry' was also issued as a third single in Europe. 'You Rock My World' managed the top ten in America, but only for a week, and its big-budget, 14-minute music video received only sparse airplay on MTV, VH1, MTV2, and BET, usually in a shortened, 5-minute version. 'Butterflies' was a top 20 hit in America as well as a #2 hit on the R&B charts, but did not reach the top 10, despite a popular radio remix featuring rapper Eve; the song's relative lack of success also allowed no budget for a music video.
In what was perhaps the 'Golden Age' of the video clip, some of Jackson's videos were virtually short films with considerable plots, impressive special effects, and featuring Jackson's distinctive dance style.

Shahrukh Khan (Hindi: शाहरुख़ ख़ान, Urdu: شاہ رخ خان), born 2 November 1965, is a highly acclaimed Indian actor who works in Bollywood films, as well as film producer and television host.
Khan started out his career appearing in several television serials in the late 1980s. He made his film debut with the commercially successful Deewana (1992). Since then, he has been part of numerous commercial successes, as well as having delivered a variety of critically acclaimed performances. During his years in the Indian film industry, he has won seven Filmfare Best Actor Awards and has had significant box office success. While films such as Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Chak De India (2007), and Om Shanti Om (2007), remain some of Bollywood's biggest hits, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Veer-Zaara (2004) and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) have been hits in the overseas market. Since 2000, Khan branched out into film production and television presenting as well.Khan was born to Muslim parents in New Delhi, India. His father, Taj Mohammed Khan was a freedom activist from Peshawar, Pakistan. His mother Lateef Fatima was the adopted daughter of Major General Shah Nawaz Khan of the Janjua Rajput clan, who served as a General in the Indian National Army of Subash Chandra Bose.[1]
Khan's father came to Gurgaon from Qissa Kahani Bazaar in Peshawar before the Partition of India,[2] while his mother's family came from Rawalpindi, also in present-day Pakistan.[3] Khan has an elder sister named Shehnaz.[4] Khan attended St. Columba's School where he was accomplished in sports, drama and academics. He won the Sword of Honour, an annual award bequeathed to the student who embodies most the spirit of the school. He later attended the Hansraj College (1985-1988) to earn an Honors degree in Economics. After this, he studied for a Masters Degree in Mass Communications at Jamia Millia Islamia.[5]
After the death of his parents, Khan moved from New Delhi to Mumbai in 1991.[6] In that same year, before any of his flim releases, he married Gauri Khan in a Hindu wedding ceremony on October 25, 1991.[7] They have two children, son Aryan (b. 1997) and daughter Suhana (b. 2000).
In 2005, Nasreen Munni Kabir produced a two-part documentary on Khan, titled The Inner and Outer World of Shah Rukh Khan. Featuring his 2004 Temptations concert tour, the film contrasted Khan's inner world of family and daily life with the outer world of his work. The book Still Reading Khan, which details his family life, was released in 2006. Another book by Anupama Chopra, "King of Bollywood] Khan has been chosen for the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of the Arts and Literature) award of the French government for his “exceptional career”
As a producer
Khan turned producer when he set up a production company called Dreamz Unlimited with Juhi Chawla and director Aziz Mirza in 1999. The first two of the films he produced and starred in: Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000) and Asoka (2001) were box office failures.[28] However, his third film, as a producer and star, Chalte Chalte (2003), was the first box office hit from his production house.[30]
In 2004, he set up another production company called Red Chillies Entertainment and produced and starred in Main Hoon Na which was another hit at the box office.[31] In 2005 he produced and starred in the fantasy film Paheli, which was a box office failure.[32] It was India's official entry to the Oscars for a nomination for Best Foreign Film, but it did not pass the final selection. That same year he also co-produced the supernatural horror film Kaal with Karan Johar and performed an item number for the film with Malaika Arora Khan. Kaal was moderately successful at the box office.[32] The latest film Om Shanti Om, which he produced as well as starred in, has done very well at the box office. In 2008, The Red Chillies Entertainment became the owner of Kolkata Knight Riders in the BCCI backed IPL cricket league.
As a television host
In 2007, Khan replaced Amitabh Bachchan as the host of the third series of the popular game show Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?.[36] The previous had hosted the show for five years from 2000-05. On January 22, 2007, Kaun Banega Crorepati aired with Khan as the new host and later ended on April 19, 2007.[37]
On April 25, 2008, Khan began hosting the game show Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain?, the Indian version of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?

Professional life
At the age of 14, Kaif started modeling for a jewelry campaign in London, and was subsequently discovered by filmmaker Kaizad Gustad, who gave her a part in his film Boom (2003).
She moved to Mumbai and was offered a number of modeling assignments. However, filmmakers were at first hesitant to sign her because of her linguistic shortcomings, such as her inability to speak Hindi without a heavy accent. Zinta met Shekhar Kapur when she accompanied her friend to an audition and was auditioned too. Coincidentally, after Kapur saw her audition he insisted on her to become an actress. Zinta was meant to make her acting debut with Kapur's Tara Rum Pum Pum opposite Hrithik Roshan but the film never took off. Later, Kapur recommended her for Mani Ratnam's "Dil Se".
Technically her first film was Kundan Shah's "Kya Kehna" but it got delayed till 2000. The delay of another film Soldier meant that she made her acting debut with Dil Se (1998). BHARAT SHAH CASE:
In 2003, Zinta was a witness in the Bharat Shah case and his links to the Mumbai mafia. She stuck by her statement that she received a threatening phone call from the mafia while shooting the film Chori Chori Chupke Chupke (2000). She was given police protection and was forced to stay out of the public eye for months. Many other celebrities including Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan were witnesses in the case but they soon retracted their statements. Zinta was the only witness not to have turned hostile.
NESS WADIA CASE:
In 2006, Zinta's boyfriend Ness Wadia was reported to have beaten up some construction workers in her building. The rumours also reported that a woman was critically injured and a child was hurt. Zinta was very angry at hearing these rumours, and had repeatedly shouted at the media very much about the incident, claiming it wasn't true. Zinta even offered 1 crore to whoever could find an injured woman. The press came up with no findings, and this rumour was considered to be false.
ALLEGED AFFAIR:
Actress and Singer Suchitra Krishnamurthy has blamed Preity Zinta for her divorce with Shekhar Kapur, alleging that Preity was having an affair with her husband.
It wasn't the first time that Krishnamurthy has accused Zinta in this issue. Previously, she had written the same in a personal blog. However, initially Zinta kept a dignified silence and refused to talk about the issue, waiting it to disappear for itself.
Krishnamurthy also stated, that after the first time she accused her in the blog, Zinta used to call her every day and try to explain to her that she was not responsible for anything, and had nothing with her husband.
When Krishnamurthy accused Zinta for the second time in an interview, Zinta was travelling and got to know that only when her business manager Tanuja Mehra informed her about it. Zinta denied all the accusations saying, "It is unfortunate that I am bearing the brunt of someone else’s paranoia. She’s clearly unstable and I wish her a speedy recovery."
Preity's last reaction was relatively calm "I really don't understand why is the media going crazy about something that does not even exist" she said. She stated that she had met Kapur only five times in 10 years. In regard to Krishnamurthy, Zinta said, "Everyone who is a nobody wants to be somebody at the expense of famous people like me." Since then, apparently this controversy has come to an end.
